# How Origin Story is made

Origin Story is written and edited by **The Origin Story Editorial Desk**, a house byline rather than a person. The byline claims a method, not credentials: every volume is built from published interviews, contemporary press, chart data, court filings and industry accounts, and every volume's sources are listed at the back of the book and reproduced in full on its page on this site.

## The five movements

1. **The Room** — The scene, and the city where it ignited. Who was actually in the room, which is rarely who the story remembers.

3. **The Records** — Six to ten records in the order they arrived, described rather than quoted — including the ones the canon dropped, and three that failed.
4. **The Money** — Who owned the publishing, what the contracts did, who got paid and who did not. The richest seam in the subject and the least written about.
5. **The Ending** — What exhausted it, and what it turned into. This is the movement that makes thirty-one separate books into one history.

## The rule

## Questions

**Why are there no song lyrics in these books?**

Because a rule of zero is the only lyric rule that can be checked. Lyrics are copyrighted expression, licensing is negotiated song by song and publisher by publisher and territory by territory, and the US Copyright Office states plainly that there is no safe quantity — no number of words, lines or pages that is automatically fair use — and names song lyrics as the hard case. Across thirty-one volumes, judging each quotation is not a production step, it is a legal department. So these books quote none, and a program checks every manuscript, every EPUB and every narration script before a volume ships. Song and record titles are not lyrics and are used freely; in most pop songs the most quotable phrase is the title.

**What replaces the lyrics?**

A description of what the record sounds like, what it cost, who played on it and who was paid. The arrangement, the tempo, the bar the drums enter, what is absent. Where the words matter, their content is paraphrased and their effect described — the second verse as an inventory of things he can no longer afford, listed like a receipt. And each volume has a public playlist sequenced to its chapters, because the book cannot play you a record but it can point at one.

**What order should I read them in?**

Any. Each volume is a complete answer to one question and assumes nothing. Read end to end they are a history of popular music, because every volume's fifth movement names what the next one picks up — but the numbering is the chronology of the music, not a required sequence. Most people start with the genre they already love.
